Oklahoma's new Attorney General Gentner Drummond plans to ask the state's Pardon and Parole Board on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, to recommend sparing the life of Glossip, a highly unusual move for the state's top prosecutor's office that typically urges the board to reject clemency.

Such a move is highly unusual for the state's top prosecutor's office, which always urges the board to reject clemency. But Drummond says in a Monday letter to the five-member board that he has serious concerns about the fairness of Glossip's trial. Drummond previously asked the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals to vacate Glossip's sentence, but the court declined to do so. Glossip has long maintained his innocence in the 1997 beating death of Barry Van Treese, the owner of the hotel where Glossip worked. He is scheduled to be executed on May 18.
