On a middle school teacher’s summer planner: Icy treats, later mornings and pool visits | Opinion
On Tyra's to-do list this summer is visiting the Chapel of Thanksgiving on the grounds of Thanks-Giving Square in downtown Dallas. Most years, by early July, I wonder why we all continue to live in North Texas. The heat is simply unbearable by then. If there’s wind, it feels like we’re being attacked by a giant, evil blow dryer, and if it’s humid, it feels like we’re trapped in a rainforest — yet deprived of all that makes a rainforest beautiful.
But summertime heat hit us early this year, sprinting in to spring without regard to our feelings whatsoever. This should be a month of outdoor festivals and leisurely walks, but instead we’re clamoring for air-conditioning and tall glasses of something, anything, cold. Among the most obvious: It’s socially acceptable to increase consumption of ice cream, snow cones and Slurpees.
