Spanish teacher, between verb conjugations and vocabulary drills, introduced us to the Alhambra. For me, the arches and domes of the castle in southern Spain evoked the romance of “The Arabian Nights,” though I realized it had been built by the Moors. Thanks to Shakespeare, I also understood that the Moors looked like me, a child of one of a half dozen Black families in our 1980s suburban-Chicago school district.
My most significant exposure to regal African design had come in fourth grade, when I saw the traveling exhibit “The Treasures of King Tutankhamun” at the Field Museum. I studied its catalog so devotionally I could have been a docent. Later encounters with royal African décor were dominated by Hollywood set-designer fantasies: the cartoonish family palace of Eddie Murphy’s character in 1988’s “Coming to America” and the Afrofuturistic Wakanda of 2018’s “Black Panther.
