On Catalina Island, drinking buffalo milk is a rite of passage

'All the way down, the bar would just be covered with buffalo milk. And that’s just the first round.'

It’s Wednesday night. I’m on Catalina Island at the Harbor Reef Restaurant bar. And I just asked the bartender for a buffalo milk, only to overhear a couple at the other end of the bar discussing the curious request then ordering the same.on the north side of the island.

The bison had plenty of grass to munch over the past hundred years, and though their numbers have fluctuated , these days about 150 of them still reside on Catalina. Wood and her companions had not been drinking buffalo milk that night, Joffray clarified, but by the early ’80s pretty much everybody else was. The drink was invented sometime in the ’70s by bartender Michael Hoffler, who was known for experimentation.Ashley Harrell
