, a magnificent documentary on real-world realizations of transphobic speech, is streaming now on, well, Netflix.at Netflix, which may sound a little limp, like people have stopped typing for 20 minutes, big whoop. But when you remember the hypercompetitive, dog-eat-dog-ness of tech companies, a silicon walkout, resulting in even a tiny dip in productivity, is significant. The walkout comes with a list of fairly reasonableI can see the free-speech argument for streaming.
Netflix’s Chappelle-aggedon makes me question two things I know to be true: that trans lives matter and speech should be free. I feel the push and pull of not wanting to live in a sanitized world, where discourse is neutered, but I can also see how most jokes are somehow, somewhere down the line, hurtful to someone. We’re reaching a hyper-criticality where everything is eventually problematic. I’d laugh about this, but someone would take offense.
I understand the argument that episodes of past shows shouldn’t be banned, that artifacts of our horrible histories should not be deleted to save face. But it’s in the present where things get more sticky. Should newly commissioned content deliberately antagonize? Is that a good strategy? The real question is whether or not Netflix is inciting violence with their inaction here.
