Legendary supermodel Karen Elson shares the story behind her new album 'Green,' and the unlikely parallels between her work in music and fashion

about the story behind the record, the unlikely parallels between her work in music and fashion, and how she’s preparing for her upcomingWas there a specific point during the pandemic when you started working on the record, or did it come about organically? After touring my second record, I really went all out. It was an incredible experience, but also exhausting. And somewhere along the way, there were a few encounters and experiences that didn’t necessarily feel so good.

Nashville is so different from other cities, and the creative community here is so close. Everyone’s not staying in the studio until four o’clock in the morning—you’re going home to tuck your kids in bed. And again, I needed that during the pandemic. So many things came to the surface for me, just in terms of how I live my life and the direction I wanted to go in. I had these epiphanies, especially when I saw people I loved getting really sick or passing away from COVID.

They started off as little vignettes, as it was just me, Ian, and Daniel in a room together at the beginning. It was like lightning, really—we all just worked so well together. It was such a breath of fresh air, and it was nice to work with these really sensitive, caring men, and just shoot an idea out there and see what happens. But my theme for the record was always that we’re in really dark times, so I need this to feel like there’s warmth within it and there’s hope within it.

I did a few things—a duet with Cat Power for a Serge Gainsbourg cover record, and backing vocals for my friend Robert Plant—and I started getting the confidence to sing. Then I was in The Citizens Band cabaret for a long time, and that really gave me the boost I needed. They were all wild, crazy, and brilliantly creative people, and they legitimized me, so then I felt more confident sharing songs that I had written.
