On this day in 1781, more than 80 years before the Emancipation Proclamation, Elizabeth Freeman sued for her freedom from slavery.

More than 80 years before the Emancipation Proclamation, an enslaved woman known as Elizabeth Freeman sued for her freedom in Massachusetts.
