by Jerry Mitchell, Mississippi Today March 3, 2023 MARCH 3, 1960 James Lawson was arrested in 1960 along with other Freedom Riders in Jackson, Mississippi. The arrest photo is contained in the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission records and is on display at the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum. Vanderbilt University expelled James Lawson for taking part in a sit-in in Nashville, Tennessee. Throughout the civil rights movement, he assisted Martin Luther King Jr.
