On this day in 1986: The Space Shuttle Challenger exploded | From the Archives
exploded over Cape Canaveral, Florida. The explosion occurred 73 seconds after takeoff, to the horror of millions of Americans watching. It was the first fatal accident involving an American space shuttle in flight. The disaster claimed the lives of the seven astronauts on board, including Christa McAuliffe, a teacher from New Hampshire who had been chosen to fly as the first civilian in space.
All seven members of the crew of the NASA Space Shuttle Challenger were killed when the shuttle exploded during launch on Jan. 28, 1986. From front left, are: astronauts Michael J. Smith, Francis R.
