This past week, Masoomi celebrated Eid al-Adha outside of Afghanistan for the first time. She said it was very different to walk around Saskatoon and see so many people who weren’t celebrating the holiday.
Eid al-Adha, the feast of sacrifice, is an annual religious holiday in the Muslim community, celebrating the end of Hajj. The holiday, which ran from July 9 to 13 this year, includes prayers, social gatherings, animal sacrifice and lots of food sharing. “In our country, when we go outside, you see lots of people there just happy, going to picnics, but here we don’t have that. We just went to our work and just celebrate a small celebration in the mosque.”
“You can see all the differences between people and it’s good because in our country we just had our people, from Afghanistan, and just one culture,” she said.“We just throw away all the hates that we have in our heart.
