Silverman: OnePlus Pad is a satisfying, sleek and simple Android tablet

The OnePlus Pad, shown here with the optional Magnetic Keyboard, is a fast, sleek and affordable Android tablet that work seamlessly with other OnePlus products. From the beginning, Apple has dominated the tablet business. Since its 2010 debut, the iPad has remained far ahead of the pack in sales, and still holds more than a 50 percent share of the worldwide tablet market. Samsung’s Android-based Galaxy Tab models run a distant second.

OnePlus, a subsidiary of the Chinese manufacturer Oppo, has been focused on smartphones until now. I reviewed the latest, the OnePlus 11, in February and loved it. It’s sleek, fast, with a great camera and minimal bloatware. Were I shopping for an Android phone today, it’s the one I’d buy . Unlike other tablets, which try to be agnostic when it comes to how you hold them, the OnePlus Pad clearly favors landscape positioning. For example, the 8-megapixel front-facing camera is on the horizontal edge that includes the magnetic stylus mount, mirroring the position of the rear camera. You certainly can hold the Pad vertically, but there are times when it’s awkward.

At the heart of the tablet is a MediaTek Dimensity 9000 system-on-a-chip, which is comparable in muscle to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen. 1 processor, and 8 GB of memory. While apps open quickly enough and it was able to handle the games I installed on it, the tablet doesn’t feel quite as snappy as the OnePlus 11 phone, which uses the Snapdragon 8 Gen. 2 processor.

OnePlus is building an ecosystem in which its devices talk to and interact with each other. To pair a OnePlus phone and its 5G connection with the Pad, simply bring the phone close to the tablet, respond to a prompt, and boom: connected. It’s very – dare I say? – Apple-like.
