El expresidente Donald Trump y los otros aspirantes presidenciales del Partido Republicano están diciendo que Estados Unidos está siendo invadido por inmigrantes indocumentados mexicanos que son responsables del contrabando de fentanilo al país.
Sin embargo, los candidatos republicanos están distorsionando totalmente la realidad y difundiendo una narrativa falsa. Lo que no están diciendo es que la mayoría de los migrantes que cruzan la frontera sin documentos no son mexicanos, sino venezolanos y centroamericanos, y que los datos oficiales muestran que los indocumentados no tienen prácticamente nada que ver con el tráfico de fentanilo.
Hablando de los inmigrantes, Trump dijo en un mitin de campaña reciente que si gana las elecciones detendría “la invasión” de indocumentados, y enviaría “miles de tropas” a la frontera”. “Si se consideran todas las llegadas irregulares a la frontera suroeste de Estados Unidos este año fiscal, los mexicanos representan solo el 30%”, me dijo Colleen Putzel-Kavanaugh, analista del Instituto de Política Migratoria, un centro de investigaciones no partidista. “El resto son principalmente venezolanos, hondureños y guatemaltecos”.
Según datos oficiales, el 86.2% de los delincuentes condenados por tráfico de fentanilo son ciudadanos estadounidenses.
