Opinion: After struggling to find a therapist, I sought mental health guidance from ChatGPT [Opinion]
After being told by one therapist after another to just breathe and all of my problems would be resolved, and after the crushing sentiment from my recent therapist that it’s impossible to ever recover from grief, I resolved to work up the courage to tell my therapistFed up with decades-long experiences that felt more like dating emotionally abusive partners than finding the right provider, I asked ChatGPT for guidance.
To its credit, ChatGPT has thus far capably provided support to users struggling with mental health issues. It utilized learning algorithms to offer personalized advice and guidance based on my unique situation. Furthermore, it boasted about its 24/7 availability, touting accessibility whenever I needed it, without having to wait another week until my next appointment.
Could I continue to scavenge Google for academic journals describing research related to my concerns, sift through unhelpful blogs and Reddit inquiries from those similarly Going Through It, navigating one unhelpful strategy after another? Sure. The more I prompt ChatGPT to adjust responses in a manner that resonates with me, the more it feels like I’ve found support that eschews rigidly sticking to ineffective techniques simply because they were learned in grad school.
