Mass shooting that killed 10 has brought us to this crossroads. Now is the time for each of us to do what we can.

Sunday afternoon I received a call from my friend Felicia in Buffalo, N.Y. She and I had met almost eight years ago. Over those years I had been invited to travel from Oakland to Buffalo multiple times to lead workshops on racism.

Like many American cities, starting in 1934, Buffalo followed the racist mortgage-lending practice called redlining. To this day, many of our nation’s urban communities, including those in Oakland and Buffalo, continue to be impacted by that shameful history. After I hung up with Felicia, I imagined that many in the Bay Area must have been feeling distraught by the news but also helpless. Many would share “thoughts and prayers” on social media. But we can and must do more.

First, let’s support those in Buffalo. Organizations there have set up funds for survivors and the community. You can learn more at www.buffalotogetherfund.org.Third, let’s donate to campaigns that are fighting for equity and volunteer for phone banking into Georgia, Texas and other states where voting rights and reproductive rights are under attack. Let’s speak with our family and friends, encourage them to vote and get involved.
