Opinion: State air board should set new truck electrification rules
As a 19-year-old African-American, first-year student at Laney College in Oakland and a youth climate activist, I have seen the impact that air pollution has on communities of color such as mine in Vallejo — in a region ranked sixth worst in the nation by the American Lung Association on its. It’s time for the California Air Resources Board to take action and adopt the Advanced Clean Fleet rule at their meeting this week.
The Advanced Clean Fleet rule will help do just that. By setting ambitious goals for the electrification of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, we can significantly reduce air pollution in our state. This is not just an environmental issue but a social justice issue. Communities of color, low-income communities and frontline workers are disproportionately impacted by air pollution, and we must take action to protect their health and well-being as well.
The clean-fleet rule is a step in the right direction. As my generation enters the workforce, we are looking for careers that have a long, bright future. The rule will drive innovation and investment in cleaner transportation technologies, creating in the process new jobs and economic opportunities for the next generation of workers like me. We can and must transition to a cleaner, more-sustainable future.
As a young person and a climate activist, I am hopeful for the future. By working together, I see the potential for our state to lead the way in building a more just, equitable and sustainable world. But young people cannot build it alone. We need the support and action of the generations that have come before us, our elected officials and our community leaders to make it happen.
