Opinion: Children in foster care need resources and support to thrive. That's where CASAs come in. [Opinion]

To understand their needs, the CASA interacts and collaborates with caregivers, social workers, teachers, therapists, biological family members, attorneys, and other adults and professionals in the child’s life.

The CASA then uses all of that information to advocate for the child to ensure their needs are met as they navigate the foster care system. Through written reports and court appearances, the special advocates provide judges with crucial information to inform the judge’s decisions about the child’s life. Special advocates champion the child’s best interests in schools, health care settings and elsewhere in the community.

Mary, the little 5-year-old girl, had a special advocate. CASA Emma was one of the first people to see her when she returned to San Diego and was there to help Mary adjust to yet another new home. Thankfully, Mary was placed with a loving foster mom. Together, Mary’s foster mom, CASA, social worker and other professionals helped Mary to access needed therapy, enroll in school, and receive tutoring assistance.
