,” : It happens often in televised political debates. The moderator wastes a question by asking the candidates to say one nice thing about their opponent. What follows is an awkward cringe-inducing moment where, after months of demonizing each other, the candidates are forced to make up a lie. So, I find myself in rare but sharp disagreement with Chris Tomlinson’s call to action to vote for one person who is not a member of your party in the upcoming election.
Mr. Tomlinson’s sentiments may have made sense before 2016, but no more. The Republican Party’s nomination and support for Russia’s candidate for president, his corrosive, disastrous four years in office, the attempted coup and the ongoing election denial has changed everything. Texas Republican politicians are no better. Ted Cruz was the leader of the effort not to certify the election results on Jan. 6.
Texas Republicans in the last legislative session showed no compunction about undermining democracy by attempting to disenfranchise Hispanic, Black and Asian voters through partisan gerrymandering. Republicans are the party of Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Ken Paxton, the Oath Keepers, the Proud Boys, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Matt Gaetz, Ron DeSantis, Troy Nehls, Louie Gohmert and David Duke.
