Opinion: Libraries should focus on their missions and let city should serve needs of homeless people [Opinion]
” : Public libraries are proud to provide books and other information sources to all people. It is a core value. But San Diego’s homeless population presents a challenge.
The article reveals that homeless people flock to the library for other things — shelter , to use the bathrooms, to sleep, to kill time, to take drugs. The current mission statement and goals of San Diego Central Library say nothing about helping people with drug problems, mental health therapy or housing.
Has the library considered that people don’t want to bring their children to the library where people are taking drugs and/or having psychotic events, and that may be why attendance is down? The library should focus on its mission and goals and the city should step up to meet the needs of homeless people now.
