Yi-Chin Lee, Houston Chronicle / Staff photographerPeter Hotez: Even fully vaccinated people are at risk from extremely contagious BA.5 variant

,” : Almost 400 people are dying every day from COVID in the United States. Is this OK or just business as usual? We are learning that the consequence of reinfections is a higher probability of heart attack, diabetes, kidney failure and blood clots. Two health emergencies are simultaneously attacking us: COVID and gun violence. Both are creating a mass deterioration event on our health care system, our society and our freedoms.

Just as we seem to have accepted the inevitability of gun violence, the same seems to be true of COVID. Both are poised to further damage an already-wounded health care system, with more death, disability and increasing stress on our lives and economy. It’s important that we don’t ignore the hundreds dying, every day, from COVID while we continue to mourn those killed by gun violence. We can decide to put life first and act on what we know can reduce the deaths caused by both.
