Who we are has become defined by the letter next to our name, causing a detrimental effect on many students.

Like many teens, I often wake up in a cold sweat from spine-chilling nightmares. They aren’t about a killer in a ghost face mask or even a bear ingesting cocaine. Invariably, these horrific dreams are sparked by a fear much worse. In them, I grab my phone, open up the Schoology app, and see a terrorizing B in the grades section.

Consequently, who we are has become defined by the letter grade next to our name, causing a detrimental effect on many students. Obsessing over grades can adversely impact young people because it threatens their mental well-being and self-esteem, leading to depression and self-doubt. Additionally, prioritizing the pursuit of a perfect grade point average has the detrimental effect of students sacrificing other activities and skills that help them develop outside of the classroom, such as leadership, drama, music and sports. Unfortunately, focusing on straight-A’s often correlates with abandoning extracurricular activities, leading to students being unprepared for the real world and having no particular identity beyond academics.

Furthermore, grade obsession leads to students worrying more about the A rather than focusing on the learning process and improving from their mistakes. Students need to learn to think for themselves, analyzing and integrating new information and ideas. After all, schools are meant to be a place where students can be persistent and take on creative new approaches to learn the material.
