Opinion: San Diego Civic Theatre must remain a part of community's arts fabric [Opinion]

” : In Jennifer Van Grove’s article regarding the Civic Theatre’s possible demise, she suggested: “The issue, then, is one of civic responsibility, with the city’s fiduciary duty to taxpayers seeming to outweigh an obligation to prop up the arts.”

I believe San Diego has an obligation not to prop up the arts but rather to its citizens to provide a quality of living that includes a vibrant arts scene that is supported by a strong public-private partnership to foster a citizenry that is vibrant, thoughtful and inspired because of its access to and engagement with the arts.I live in North County. My wife and I go Downtown mainly for two reasons. First, the airport. Fighting that traffic just makes us want to get home.

Each time we go, we pay for parking. We almost always visit a restaurant and other businesses, adding more money to the local economy. Multiply that by more than 3,000 and the impact the theater has on our economy is tremendous. The theater adds so much to San Diego’s pride and performing arts reputation that it also draws many big spenders from out of town.
