Both book and movie have the same basic plot. Cantankerous, brilliant Phil Burbank and his stolid brother George are wealthy, successful cattle ranchers in 1920s Montana. George falls for and marries small restaurant owner and widow Rose Gordon , much to Phil’s snobbish disgust. Phil subtly and not so subtly bullies Rose and her thin, effeminate son, the medical student Peter .
Campion makes two major changes to Savage’s source material. The first concerns Peter’s father and Rose’s first husband, Johnny. Johnny is largely absent from the movie; he isn’t even named. All we know about him is that he was a drunk, that he worried Peter was too strong and that he killed himself.
