Opinion: To improve outcomes for English learners, let's change how we test children's reading [Opinion]
Though our region leads in educational practices and reading outcomes, more can be done to improve outcomes for bilingual children — and one of those improvements is in how we test children’s reading. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond wrote in, “the home language skills that students bring to California schools are a valuable asset in their own right as well as in developing literacy in English.
If we see what students know in their home language, they can spend less time in remedial instruction to learn what they already know, at the opportunity cost of building new skills. And this would only benefit all stakeholders. Students would have improved vocational and educational prospects. Teachers would see a clearer pathway to success in literacy for their students. Parents would have their parenting and culture celebrated. Community members would see educational resources, funded by their tax dollars, spent more effectively.
