Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner is investigating after video surfaces of officer Tasering suicidal man
Footage surfaced online Tuesday, prompting calls from the Vancouver Police Department and members of the public to the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner.
The video she later posted to social media, which has amassed 1.9 million views, shows six police officers standing around a man when the officer discharges the Taser. Linda Stewart, a former crisis negotiator of 20 years on the Vancouver Police force, said it’s not uncommon for officers to use Tasers during crisis calls.Article content
Police are taught that listening and clear and honest communication is the key to de-escalating a person experiencing a mental health crisis. Every three years, officers must undergo a refresher course on the material. “You think, ‘they are safe from hurting themselves or others and can be brought to a hospital for help.'”
