NEW YORK, NEW YORK - AUGUST 08: Owen Wilson attends Paramount+'s 'Secret Headquarters' New York Premiere at Signature Theater on August 08, 2022 in New York City.In Vermont’s tallest peak, Carl Nargle found his Rushmore. Parallels between Nargle, the middle-aged public access TV painter Owen Wilson plays in the movie “Paint" and Max Fischer, the teenage student Wilson co-wrote into “Rushmore” 25 years ago, aren’t exactly obvious.

For Nargle to find peace with his Mansfield, he travels a complicated path of discovery in writer/director Brit McAdams’ film. “Paint” on the surface has the appearance of a sight gag film, with Wilson’s Nargle outfitted in outdated duds and a spherical perm meant to call to mind the late legend of televised landscape painting, Bob Ross. But when a younger painter stakes a claim to Nargle’s space, the film takes on a sweet sadness about inspiration, affirmation and connection.

In Nargle’s case, he’s beloved in Vermont with an identifiable visage, a calming voice and a catchphrase: “Thanks for going to a special place with me.” Over time his show became soothing appointment viewing for amateur painters, sure, but also barflies and residents of retirement homes. Nargle’s renown in the Green Mountain State has afforded him seemingly unwavering employment as well as status as an unlikely lothario with a mobile love nest of a van.

The two co-wrote a script for a short film, “Bottle Rocket,” which celebrated its 30th anniversary last year. They found funding to make a feature-length version of the film in 1996, which like the short starred Wilson and his brother Luke. Wilson would co-write two more films with Anderson — “Rushmore” and “The Royal Tenenbaums” — but appearances in films like “Shanghai Noon” and “Zoolander” proved him bankable as an actor, work that has been his primary pursuit since.

Wilson suggests any vocation can lead to a Nargle-like rut, but also says “that isn’t the most hopeless road to go down. Go to a museum, you’ll see a painter who got one idea and just kept going with that idea.”
