The congregation worshipping in the former Third Ave. United church building doesn\u0027t use instruments in it services, and says the organ is too costly to fix.

Several members of city council’s planning and development committee admitted Wednesday that they probably aren’t qualified to assess the historical value of century-old musical instruments.Ward 10 Coun. Zach Jeffries was among those to say he was having “a tough time adjudicating” the matter of what to do with the organ in the former Third Avenue United Church building.St. Vincent’s priest Fr.

He added that the organ was significantly rebuilt at least twice in decades past, leading to some question as to the historical value of parts that were replaced. She pointed to city reports that previously recommended keeping the organ out of the historical designation, to better allow a potential buyer to adapt the interior of the building, and suggested this was always the wisest course of action.

Ward 2 Coun. Hilary Gough said correspondence received on the issue left her of the view there are stakeholders in the community who haven’t been heard from. The city’s lawyer informed the committee that should the motion to remove the organ’s historical designation proceed to council, anyone wishing to do so could register an objection; this would have the effect of delaying council’s vote until the matter could be considered by a provincial review board.
