An in-person Capitol tree-lighting ceremony in the Pennsylvania Capitol Rotunda will take place at noon on Dec. 5 for the first time since 2019.
Christmas tree arrives at the Capitol in HarrisburgIn another sign that COVID-19 is moving into the rear-view, there will be an in-person Christmas tree-lighting ceremony in the Pennsylvania Capitol Rotunda this year.
The tradition that marks the official start of the holiday season in the Capitol Complex was interrupted over the past two years due to concerns about the spread of COVID-19. In fact,placed inside the Rotunda to avoid groups of people gathering inside the building at a time when cases of the coronavirus were surging.
But it’s back. A 20-foot Douglas fir that comes from Crystal Spring Tree Farm in Lehighton, Carbon County, was pulled into the Capitol on Wednesday and maneuvered with the help of ropes and dozens of strong hands into a large green stand at the center of the Rotunda. It will be lit at noon on Monday, Dec. 5 during a ceremony attended by Gov. Tom Wolf, first lady Frances Wolf as well as some other guests, said state Department of General Services spokesman Troy Thompson. The public is invited to attend.
The Rotunda tree will be decorated with hundreds of donated handmade ornaments from senior citizens and preschoolers from around the state, illuminated with more than 900 LED lights and topped with a metal-fabricated star manufactured by the state Department of General Services.A second 20-foot Douglas fir will be placed on the front steps of the Capitol and illuminated with more than 1,100 lights. Thompson said it will be illuminated every evening from 5 p.m. to midnight..
