The jazz man lay in repose with the golden trumpet he had breathed so much life into over the years resting mutely at his side.
A folded flag, marking his military service, was positioned above the open lid. Later, it would drape his casket as Ronnie was taken to his final resting place in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
“As a jazz fan, I’ve known Ronnie Waters the musician literally for decades,” Ross said. “I have had the privilege of getting to know him as a person. His devotion to ‘his kids’ in the Youth Band was like nothing I have ever witnessed. He was dedicated, patient and a wonderful teacher. He instilled in band members a love of jazz improvisation and a foundation for continuing their jazz studies at the high school and college level.
In comments to PennLive, Phillip Cave said he had “the pleasure of playing under Ronnie” as the guitarist for the Youth Band throughout his middle school and high school years. But it was his childhood trips to Caplan’s Department Store downtown that formed the musical foundation for his long life in notes. At the store’s record department, Ronnie discovered jazz. And once he did, Ronnie would trek there regularly to buy the records of the masters: Duke Ellington. Cab Calloway. Dizzy Gillespie.
