Through the first quarter of the season, as the offense that was supposed to be amazing underwhelmed, the starting rotation that was supposed to be middling was better than expected. Two errors helped the Padres to two unearned runs in the fifth, and an ill-advised dive helped them score twice more in the sixth.
After Xander Bogaerts led off the sixth inning with a single, a dive by Royals center fielder Nate Eaton turned what would have been a single by Matt Carpenter into an RBI double. Taylor Clarke replaced Chapman at the start of the eighth and walked Bogaerts with one out and yielded Rougned Odor’s two-out single to put men at the corners before Odor was picked off first base.The Padres lost for just the third time in the 22 games in which they have scored at least four runs.
