New hitting coach, most of same players working on moving past problems that bogged down offense last year
There was one period, in fact, in which they were by some measures the best at it.batters as a group were more productive than they had ever been over such a span in the franchise’s 53 years of existence. From June 16 through July 18, they led the major leagues with an .884 OPS, hit 48 home runs and averaged 6.1 runs per game. The Padres were 5½ games up in the race for the second National League wild card spot and just four games behind the Dodgers and five behind the Giants on July 18.
But the offense couldn’t halt the team’s freefall because that stretch of early summer turned out to be the only time during the season in which almost every player in the lineup was producing at the same time. Despite three players finishing in the top 25 in the NL in OPS, the Padres ranked ninth out of 15 teams in the National League in that stat, 11“The name of this game from an offensive world is consistency,” center fielder Trent Grisham said. “Everybody has heard that for years and years and years, but that’s what it boils down to. You have to be consistent — all of us. We have to be consistent. That’s what we’re fighting for every day.
Part of the tweaks Brdar and the rest of the hitting coaches will make involves focus on two important areas. A hitter’s greatest strength can be knowing his weaknesses, which means laying off pitches he can’t do damage on. A pitcher’s best weapon can be exploiting those weaknesses, especially if a hitter is not committed to an approach.
