Padres pregame: Brett Sullivan optioned to El Paso as newcomer Gary Sanchez starts behind plate

The Padres claimed Gary Sanchez off waivers Monday and will start him behind the plate on Tuesday at the Miami Marlins

Although there are questions about Sanchez’s defensive prowess, he’s at least a dangerous bat to add to the lineup despite his inconsistencies .

The right-handed-hitting Sanchez blasted 16 homers last year with the Twins and has at least 10 homers in every season in the majors. He hit as many as 34 for the Yankees in 2019 and has a career .777 OPS, powered in large part by a .466 career slugging percentage.Matt Carpenter
