Jackson Merrill walking more than ever did as a minor leaguer as Padres try him in leadoff spot
Extra innings. Dodger Stadium. As regular-season games go, it doesn’t get more high stakes than that. So with Jackson Merrill coming through with the game-winning hit on Friday, the Padres have decided that a move to the top of the order will suit the 20-year-old rookie just fine.
“I see somebody that's just going to trust their ability and this is a huge, huge ability to be able to go out in the 11th inning off a tough lefty and be down 0-2 and you just see based on the body language and the intent somebody that's going to figure out a way to get it done,” Padres manager Mike Shildt said late Friday night.
