Chief Larry Yott, who retired last week, first met new Palos Heights police Chief William Czajkowski in the 1980s, when the younger man was working in the city's Public Works garage.

Yott spent 50 years on the Palos Heights force.It sounds like it could have been a title of a movie in the 1960s. Rather, it was a meeting that took place in the mid 1980s in a Public Works garage in Palos Heights.“Gearhead” was how Larry Yott described himself, then a veteran of about 15 years on the Palos Heights police force who liked to hang around the garage.
A few decades have gone by, and Yott worked his way up to police chief. He officially retired last week after 50 years of service to the force.Czajkowski has 35 years of service under his Sam Browne belt and has long had a connection with Yott. Neither had any idea that day they met in the garage that they would reach such lofty heights on the force in the Heights.
Opportunities have been plentiful for both men. During Yott’s 50th anniversary party Feb. 28 at the police station, Palos Heights Ald. Jerry McGovern had glowing things to say about them.McGovern’s 32 years as a Chicago officer and detective and work with the Cook County Sheriff’s Department give his opinion some weight. He marveled at how well trained the officers are under Yott’s watch, noting the Palos Heights force “in my opinion, are better trained than the 12,000 in Chicago.
