A paralyzed man was able to walk again for the first time in medical history after successfully receiving a spinal implant.
The man is one of three who've successfully received the implant and are now moving about once more. In 2017, man named Michel Roccati got into a motorbike accident that severed his spinal cord, leaving him paralyzed.BBC News reports
“I stand up, walk where I want to, I can walk the stairs—it’s almost a normal life,” tells the Italy native to the BBC.on Monday explains that this incredible medical achievement has been a long 30 years in the making. The group of Swiss researchers behind the study observed the effects of the implant on three participants—Roccati included—all of whom were able to “stand, walk, cycle, swim and control trunk movements” within a day of getting the implant.
Nevertheless, the progress is extraordinary: Roccati is not only able to stand for two hours before tiring, but enjoy a drink at a standing table and look people in the eye again.
