PARIS — Despite playing before a crowd that badly wanted to carry him through, Spain’s Rafael Nadal couldn’t fight off a dominant performance from Serbia’s Novak Djokovic — his longtime rival — succumbing 6-1, 6-4 in the second round of the men’s Olympic tennis tournament at Roland Garros. Nadal, 38, was overmatched early but displayed remarkable fight in what may have been his last singles match at the stadium where he became beloved by French fans.
He lost his first-round French Open match here this year, and now is out of the Olympics. As Djokovic handled Nadal in breaking him twice early in the second set, the packed crowd at Court Philippe-Chartier tried to will Nadal back into the match. Down 4-1 in the second set, Nadal finally got a break point against Djokovic — and the crowd exploded. When Djokovic double-faulted to lose the game, Nadal had even a smidgen of momentum for the first time all afternoon.
