Get a first look at the Paris 2024 Olympic medal designs! The medals feature actual pieces of scrap metal from the Eiffel Tower.
Athletes who win medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics will be bringing home a piece of history — both figuratively and literally. The medals awarded at this year's Summer Games, which kick off July 26 in the City of Light, have been embellished with pieces of the Eiffel Tower. A 18-gram hexagonal chunk of iron taken from the iconic Paris landmark, which was built for the 1889 World’s Fair, was embedded in each gold, silver and bronze medal, explains the official Olympics website.
The hexagonal shape of the iron pieces is a tribute to the shape of France, a nation that is sometimes called “L’hexagone.” The iron pieces are engraved with the phrase 'Paris 2024' along with the image of the Olympic torch and five Olympic rings. The other side the medals features the image of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, standing in front of Athens’ Panathenaic Stadium, the Acropolis and the Eiffel Tower.
