Lefthanded reliever Parker Mushinski started a minor league rehab assignment with Class AAA Sugar Land on Wednesday, representing his final step before a possible return to Houston’s major league bullpen.described as left elbow discomfort. He is one of three injured lefthanded pitchers on the team’s 40-man roster. Framber Valdez is the only healthy southpaw on the Astros’ 40-man.
Pitching coach Josh Miller said Mushinski will need “at least a couple” outings with the Space Cowboys before he’s ready to return. Whether the 26-year-old rookie comes back to the major league bullpen is up for debate. Without Mushinski or fellow southpaw Blake Taylor available, the Astros are carrying an all righthanded bullpen. The team is deploying a six-man rotation, too, meaning the relief corps is one man short.
Of the seven remaining relievers, only Bryan Abreu and Seth Martinez are in jeopardy of being optioned to Class AAA Sugar Land. Martinez has allowed two earned runs in 24⅓ innings as the team’s long man, a wonderful rookie season not at all worthy of a demotion.
