“I’m just at a place now where I don't mind being alone at all,” Parker Posey says in a new interview. “I’m not the first woman living alone in New York, you know?”
On a recent Tuesday morning, Parker Posey met me outside her Chelsea apartment building, wearing a billowy black Rachel Comey skirt, a vintage navy poplin blouse, and nothing on her feet. “Hello-o-o!” she cried, waving wildly at me from across the street. When I got closer, she coquettishly batted her eyes, which were painted with iridescent eyeshadow. “I put it on for you,” she said.
At a certain point in your life, you start to see things holistically. So was she always a dialect coach—this teacher of yours, Liz?coach. I actually made a recording for her down South, when I went to see my parents, of all these different Southern accents that she still uses.I got really just immersed in playing her. With Freda, there’s a lot of interviews to watch. And I read this book, “It is a very fast read and is geared toward the prosecution’s case.
Cullen Moss, who plays Jim Hardin, who I adore, is my scene partner, and I really look up to him. I wanted to do a good job for him. He knows that he has to get Freda on his team, because as a woman she can persuade. She’s dramatic enough. She’s very reactive, and she’s got her antennae out. In the script, they describe her as a hawk, this intensity of going after the jugular. She’s someone who’s going to really get her claws in something.
I’ve never played a real person before, and it felt like such an opportunity, and it ended up being an honor. No matter what you think of her, she was loved by people. She was a presence in the world of the Durham scene.Oh, yes, I just did “Tales of the Walking Dead.” I may or may not get killed by a zombie. That’s what we’re doing now. I mean, I’d love some new forms to come in.
Also, my grandmother would put on false lashes, and I, too, have been wearing these magnetic lashes daily just to help me, when I look at myself, look like I’m awake and alive and alert. But I didn’t put them on this morning. Well, you tell me? I’ll give you a little anecdote about that. I did always want to play small character parts in big Hollywood movies. That was always where I thought I could fit in. But then I wouldn’t get those parts, and then I asked my agents. I was with C.A.A. at the time. I was, like, “I just want to know, what are these people saying?” Because I’d meet these people and I’d be, like, “Oh, I’d love to be in it.” Then it wouldn’t happen.
