Parkland Hospital on Jan. 31, 2020 in Dallas.Walk into the emergency room at Parkland Memorial Hospital and you won’t get far before encountering an outdated, airportlike security checkpoint.

After putting your keys, phone and other items on a conveyor belt, you’ll have to walk through a metal detector to make sure you don’t have a gun.Unfortunately, in light of increasing violence at hospitals nationwide, this clumsy, one-by-one system is an archaic way of protecting patients, employees and guests. What’s more, these old-school metal detectors are only set up in a few Parkland locations, leaving other entry points at the main hospital and other facilities vulnerable.
