A conflict over the creation of an events coordinator position in the Parks Department led three Lake Station city council members to oppose the city’s 2024 budget, approved by a 4-3 vote Thursday.
Mayor Bill Carroll and other council members said the full-time coordinator was needed to plan events to draw people to the city and generate revenue. The city earmarked a $45,000 salary for the job in its non-reverting park budget, which isn’t funded by tax dollars. Councilwoman Ericka Castillo, D-4th, said she and other council members objected to the money because workers in the city court were the only salaried employees who didn’t receive a raise.
He said the swap saved the city about $27,000 because it didn’t have to purchase a new vehicle and outfit it for police use. After the council passed salary ordinances for appointed officials and elected officials, Castillo, Pedroza, and Lemley left their seats and walked out of the meeting. “I think that’s very unprofessional,” said Councilman Carlos Luna, D-1st. “We try to do our best for you. I hope the election doesn’t get any dirtier.” Councilman Rick Long, D-5th, agreed.
