Pennsylvania's state Senate voted this week to pare back a Depression-era law that allows Philadelphia to impose a commuter tax on suburban residents.
The bill passed, 28-21, on Wednesday, with every Republican and one Democrat backing it. However, it likely faces a chilly reception in the state House of Representatives, where Democrats have a one-seat majority.
The bill's sponsor, Sen. Frank Farry, R-Bucks, and other supporters said the law is outdated because it requires people who work from home to pay Philadelphia wage taxes just because they work for an employer in Philadelphia.
