We have already lost precious time in cleaning up our air and addressing climate change.

A prairie strip filled with flowers and wild rye grass between soybean fields on Tim Smith’s farm near Eagle Grove, Iowa, reduces greenhouse gases and stores carbon in the soil. Fossil fuel power plants contribute to climate change by releasing greenhouse gases that trap heat near Earth’s surface.

RGGI is widely and enthusiastically supported by residents across our commonwealth. Yet, with the passing of the most recent quarterly auction on December 7, Pennsylvania missed out on over $207 million in investment dollars. By the end of this year, these stalling tactics will have deprived Pennsylvanians of close to a billion dollars in RGGI revenues.

When Pennsylvania linked to RGGI, the relief I felt was immense. My child and I both suffer from asthma, which is made worse by air pollution as well as by extreme heat. On very hot days, and on days with poor air quality, people with asthma are left weighing the real danger of an asthma attack against the need to walk to the store for groceries or worrying that the air quality makes it unsafe for asthmatic kids to walk to school.

That’s one reason I was so thankful when we linked to RGGI as it provides an immediate opportunity to address both air quality and the climate crisis, all while generating revenues for investment that will improve the lives of Pennsylvanians. In fact, a study from Columbia University shows that by lowering harmful soot from power plants, RGGI has helped to avoid not just asthma attacks but also preterm births and low birth weight.
