Former Reds player and manager Pete Rose, who is banned from baseball for gambling on games while playing and managing, isn't buying Shohei Ohtani's story.

CINCINNATI - Former Cincinnati Reds player and manager Pete Rose, who is banned from baseball for gambling on games while playing and managing, isn't buying the reason MLB player Shohei Ohtani paid $4.5 million to a bookmaker. While sitting next to a man who identified himself as Matt Thrash in what appeared to be a sports bar, Rose wanted to chime in on the Ohtani situation and said on a video that was, "Well, back in the 70s and 80s, I wish I'd had an interpreter.

The inference is that Rose doesn't believe Ohtani's story and that he is using the interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, as the fall guy for Ohtani actually paying the debt -- whether it was his own debt or Mizuhara's.Major League Baseball announced Friday afternoon that its department of investigations also is formally looking into the matter. Ohtani, however, is expected to continue to play while the investigation unfolds.
