'I have more to offer.'
For List, who has enjoyed disappearing into her characters from an early age, child stardom wasn’t necessarily the end goal. But she feels that the sets she grew up on were the best training ground for any young actor, because of the support that she received from her peers, including studio teachers, directors and producers — a reality that she knows wasn’t always the case for her predecessors.
“I was best friends with every young actor, and I think [it was great that] all of us were going through it at the same time and having each other to lean on,” adds List, who is still “grateful” that “Instagram was just coming up” when she was first starting out. “A few of us have very authentic, good parents, so to be able to come home to each other and have our sanity and our normalcy outside of [the attention of the show] really helps.
In retrospect, List realizes that, while she enjoyed her Disney Channel days, she was searching for greener pastures. During her final season at the network, she would spend her lunch breaks “hustling” and running to auditions. “I wanted to prove to myself that I could do other things,” she explains. “I booked something on the day we were wrapping and I was like, ‘Okay, let's keep it going.’”
