Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott makes historic gift to Communities in Schools of North Texas
Communities in Schools provides students with mental health support, academic programming, food and other help.
“It is not a stretch to say that this gift will save lives,” Adam Powell, the Dallas-area CIS president and CEO, said in a statement. Ann Pape Wilson, the CEO of Communities in Schools of North Texas called Scott’s gift transformative. Scott is known for her education-focused philanthropy efforts. In the time since Scott divorced Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, she has donated more than $8 billion, according toRey Saldaña, the president and CEO of CIS, said the call alerting him of Scott’s donation “came out of nowhere,”. The donation is unrestricted, meaning the nonprofit has flexibility on how to spend the funds, he said.
