Conflict and disease often overlap as people are displaced and sanitation and services break down. Throughout history, wars have sparked devastating outbreaks—and some medical breakthroughs.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is the latest example, coming in the midst of a global pandemic and heightening the risk of Covid-19 exposure for soldiers and civilians, said Sylvie Briand of the World Health Organization.At one time, disease regularly killed more soldiers than conflict. Eight times more British soldiers died from diseases including typhus and diphtheria than from battle wounds during the Napoleonic wars, historians said.
In West Africa in 2014, Ebola spread in countries where civil war had destroyed healthcare and other services. The outbreak lasted for two-and-a-half years and caused more than 11,000 deaths, according to the CDC.Direct attacks on healthcare facilities also hurt residents of countries at war. In Syria, healthcare workers were attacked, and hospitals were targeted.
