Authorities believe that the pilot, who reported engine failure, was headed toward Easton Airport.

First responders search the Tred Avon River in Easton, Md., where a small plane crashed Tuesday. A pilot died after a small plane that took off from Tipton Airport in Fort Meade crashed into a river in Easton on Tuesday morning, Maryland State Police said.

The plane took off shortly before 9 a.m. and crashed into the Tred Avon River about 40 minutes later near the 6800 block of Travelers Rest Circle. Authorities believe the pilot was headed toward Easton Airport. A spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement that the plane was a twin-engine Cessna 402 and that only the pilot, who reported engine failure, was on board. Police did not identify the pilot, pending family notification.

The NTSB is leading the investigation. NTSB spokesman Peter C. Knudson said that when the airplane is recovered from the water, it will be moved to a secure facility for further evaluation and that a preliminary report is expected within 30 days. Police said the Anne Arundel County Fire Department responded to the scene and recovered the victim’s body. Divers received assistance from the Natural Resources Police Underwater Operations Unit.
