After experimenting with real pirates in past movies, Pirates of the Caribbean should take a page out of history for the next installment.

If adapted, two real-life pirates can provide a breath of fresh air for the Pirates of the Caribbean series. The Pirates of the Caribbean movies, which dive headfirst into the swashbuckling world of the golden age of piracy, are centered on a fictional cast of heroes. However, the franchise does have a track record of taking occasional inspiration from real events and people connected to this particular period of history.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Mary Read & Anne Bonny Is The Perfect Pirates Of The Caribbean Story Real-life pirates Anne Read and Anne Bonny would be a great way for the series to introduce new characters into the story. Born illegitimately, both young women were disguised as boys by their respective families to avoid scandal. Anne was disowned after marrying a poor sailor named James Bonny.

Known for their ruthlessness, the two young women gave a new meaning to the superstition that women brought bad luck to a ship. A pair of menacing female pirate captains based in real-world history would be the perfect addition to the series, particularly after Elizabeth Swann’s iconic rise to Pirate King. Especially since they were real historical figures, Mary and Anne could be the perfect way to restore the original feel of the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

Many ideas for new additions to the Pirates of the Caribbean series have circulated throughout the years, but none have actually reached development. Margot Robbie was involved in one possible Pirates of the Caribbean spinoff movie that would have followed a female protagonist. The fate of Robbie’s Pirates project is complicated to say the least, and a new script featuring Mary and Anne could be a great way to revive the plans for a new movie.
