The site in the Gibbstown section of Greenwich Township — which is being developed by Delaware River Partners, an affiliate of the natural gas company New Fortress Energy — was planned to be New Jersey’s first terminal for exporting liquefied natural gas. Monday’s denial by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration for the renewed permit to transport liquified natural gas will hamper Delaware River Partners and their affiliate companies’ plans for Gibbstown and Wyalusing, according to critics of the project.
Environmental groups are trying to overturn the Trump administration’s 2020 rule, which for the first time, lifted the long-standing ban on liquefied natural gas transport by rail. “Denial of the special permit is a necessary, but not sufficient, step to stop the construction of the Gibbstown LNG Terminal,” said Ong.
