Former Astros player, manager and broadcaster was honored by the Harris County Houston...

“I think I’m old enough, and for this particular award, that is one of the qualifications,” said Dierker, who has spent 57 of his 76 years in Houston after joining the Astros at age 18 in 1965. He had stints as a player, finishing up his career with one year in St. Louis, broadcaster and manager of the Astros.

“The broadcasting was more fun than anything, and the managing was the most rewarding, but playing was the most special,” he said. Dierker’s predecessor in receiving the achievement award was broadcaster Bill Worrell, who introduced Dierker during the awards presentation Wednesday night at the Wortham Center.

“I used to go out to the University of Houston because I was the youngest guy in the league and I wanted to meet people my own age,” Dierker said. “That’s where I met Bill in 1965.”
